Clàudia Galicia: “A race to enjoy from the beginning to the end”

Unbeatable at La Rioja Bike Race presented by Shimano and winner of the 2014 Andalucía Bike Race presented by Shimano, she’s been the best Spaniard at the latest MTB marathon (XCM) world championships.

After becoming mountain skiing world champion in the sprint discipline, winning again La Rioja Bike Race presented by Shimano and being 11th at the MTB marathon (XCM) world championship, how are you living this year?

This year the results are showing and I’m very happy. I’m training like in previous seasons but face the races more tranquility and experience. Besides my body has adapted to the demands of the season and this gives me more strength and energy to face new challenges.

Did you expect these successes?

Regarding the mountain skiing worls championship, you never expect it, but I had trained a lot for that day. I was very sure that if I wanted the gold medal it had to be that day.

I didn’t expect aldo the other results but had trained hard and this season I feel I recover much better. This means the preparation with my coach is working and makes feel very proud.

What are your expectations for GAES Cataluña Bike Race Presented by Shimano?

I hope to feel good, have good feelings and make the training I’ve been doing until now stands out in the results. Let’s see what contenders will race but the goal is to fight for the podium.

It must be taken into account that it will be a race at the end of the season and will arrive with many kilometres and tired bodies, but for sure that will enjoy it a lot, which is what matters.

José Antonio Hermida has designed a route which you know very well. Suitable for many mountain bikers and fun, what does the Cerdanya have to offer to mountain bikers?

It’s an area very suitable to train and practice mountain biking. There are many trails and many technical singletracks. The views of the Cadí mountain range are awesome and its an iconic and ideal area.

What will be the most difficult for the riders?

It’s a very complete race, that might not be easy for those coming from sea level and racing at certain altitude, but we really don’t ride too high. The start is at 1.000 metres but I don’t think this will make any difference in the standings.

It will be a physically demanding race, as any MTB stage race, and with different technical demands. The narrow singletracks will require more caution but it’s an accesible race for everyone and the route is designed to enjoy it from the beginning to the end.

What advice would you give to riders who are novice at MTB stage race such as GAES Cataluña Bike Race Presented by Shimano?

They must think that it’s three days. You must be aware of fatigue and must recover very well. I always recommend to be cautious in the first stage, to ware out at the beginning could make you be very tired for the next two and then it’s more difficult to enjoy the race.

It’s very important to eat and drink properly and rest on the afternoons, going for a walk or discovering the Cerdanya with family and friends, in order to have both physical and mental strength for the next day.
